A Future Sunset Part 1

A few things, among them Scott with the blog Rhone Street Gardens have been inspiring me during this summer and given me the idea to start a ”sunset” border next year. I have a spot that gets the evening sun, where some rather ugly black currants grow right now, that really is in need of a makeover. Besides getting the evening light the idea would be to use orange, apricot and red flowered plants, maybe even with a little yellow which I usually avoid like the plague.

I already have a lot of plants that could move there next year: some Miscanthus ‘Malepartus’, M. ‘Morning Light’ and a Miscanthus that I’m not sure I have the name of, obviously several of my dahlias suit the color scheme, I grew a nice red Rudbeckia this year, I might add something to climb on for some Quamoclit lobata and Thunbergia ‘African Sunset’, I want to try some apricot-red Agastache (rupestris, ‘Acapulco Orange’ or ‘Desert Sunrise’ would be nice, though I imagine A. rupestris seeds might be the most easily available). Some Crocosmia is a given and I hope I could find Persicaria ‘Firetail’. My mum has a lot of tiger lilies so those would be nice as well.

So all in all, I’m considering:

Agastache (rupestris, ‘Acapulco Orange’ or ‘Desert Sunrise’)
Antirrhinum ‘Cinnamon Bronze’
Antirrhinum ‘Pirouette F1 Orange Bicolour’ I had a potplant of this snapdragon this year its just 30 cm high
Aquilegia, ‘Tequila Sunrise’, or other similar
Begonia – large red ones in pots
Canna – ‘Tropicanna’ perhaps
Carex comans ‘Bronze’
Crocosmia, several suitable
Dahlia ‘Ariko Zsaza’ etc.
Dahlia ‘David Howard’
Echinaceas, those fab new orange ones
Euphorbia ‘Dixter’
Helenium – red and orange
Heucheras in suitable shades ( I have ‘Marmalade’ and a few others)
Heucherella ‘Sweet Tea’
Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’
Lilium lancifolium
Lonicera ‘Dropmore Scarlet’
Meconopsis cambrica – orange rathet than yellow ones
Miscanthus ‘Malepartus’
Molinia ( I have one that could be divided)
Monarda – some red variety
Narcissus – yellow ones for once
Oregano, yellow leaved
Paeonia ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ – I have this already, ‘Kopper Kettle’ would also work
Persicaria ‘Firetail’
Primula vulgaris hybrids in red and yellow (they grow like crazy in my mum’s rockery)
Quamoclit lobata
Rudbeckia
‘Cherry Brandy’
Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ – I just need a few cuttings from my old plants
Thunbergia ‘African Sunset’
Tulipa – Apeldoorn hybrids

One of the apricot coulured Black-eyed Susans I grew this year. / Aprikoosin värisiä mustasilmäsusannoja. / En av de aprikosfärgade Thunbergiorna.

The red Rudbeckia ‘Cherry Brandy’, the seed was from Thompson & Morgan. / Punainen Rudbeckia ‘Cherry Brandy’,  T&M siementä . / En röd rudbeckia ‘Cherry Brandy’, fröna från T&M.

Dahlia ‘Date’

Dahlia ‘Renato Tosio’

Dahlia ‘Ariko Zsaza’

I think this dahlia might be one that I’ve raised from the seed mix ‘Bishop’s Children’ / taitaa olla ‘Bishop’s Children’ siemenseoksen satoa / antagligen en dahlia som härstammar från ‘Bishop’s Children’ fröblandningen

Antirrhiunum ‘Cinnamon Bronze’

Echinacea sp. might be / ehkä / kanske ‘Sundown’

Lilium lancifolium

Obviously I might have to take out a lot from that list and instead think a bit more about textures and heights, but as far as the flowers go, this is where I’m starting. I also have to figure out the dimensions..

More pics to follow / jatkan myöhemmin lisäkuvilla / jag fortsätter lite senare med mer bilder

More about my seed raising here / hiukan enemmän mun siemenkasvatuksista täällä/ lite mer om mina frösådder här

I’ll be back!

I'am a marketing and gardening professional and I plan to blog about garden photography (with an amateur’s perspective on it), gardens, plants, most things even vaguely garden related and garden trips around the world.
