I’m Hoping to Grow

From left to right, top row: Antirrhinum ‘Opus Plum Blossom’ (PoD), Thunbergia alata ‘African Sunset’  (PoD), Thunbergia alata ‘Blushing Susie’ (T&M), Thunbergia alata ‘African Sunset’ (T&M), Antirrhinum ‘Cinnamon Bronze’ (PoD). Middle, left to right: Maurandya ‘Bridal Bouquet’ (PW), Aquilegia ‘Green Apples’ (PW), Cobaea scandens var. alba (PoD), Digitalis lanata ‘Cafe Creme’  (PoD). Bottom row, from left to right: Aquilegia ‘Black Barlow’ (PW), Meconopsis wallichii (PW), Meconopsis betonicifolia ‘Alba’ (PW), Cosmos ‘Collarette White’ (PoD) and Asarina procumbens (PW). Pictures form the supplier’s pages.

I was thinking of renewing my aquilegias a bit, I love them and they are easy to raise, but unfortunately they are quite short lived. I’m thinking of getting at least two kinds Aquilegia ‘Black Barlow’ and Aquilegia ‘Lime Sorbet’ or perhaps Aquilegia ‘Green Apples’.

I also thought I’d renew my carnations a bit with a few new ones, or at least new for me, cultivars:
Dianthus ‘Oeschenberg’  and Dianthus ‘Tuxedo Black’ . I suspect ‘Tuxedo Black’ is a bit like ’Sooty’ that I’ve grown previously.

I also thought I could give two slightly more uncommon foxgloves a try: Digitalis stewartii, Digitalis viridiflora. This page  of the Alpine Garden Society has a beautiful picture of the D. viridiflora.

From Plants of Distinction I’ m getting one more foxglove:  Digitalis lanata ‘Cafe Creme’ and then I’m getting a few favorite annuals: Antirrhinum ‘Cinnamon Bronze’ F1, Cobaea scandens var. alba and Cosmos ‘Collarette White’. I’m also goin to try a new snapdragon from Plants of Distinction: Antirrhinum ‘Opus Plum Blossom’.

Cosmos ‘Collarette White’ a few years ago.

Antirrhinum ‘Cinnamon Bronze’ in my “tropical garden”, also a few years ago.

Cobaea scandens var. alba, ideal except that it flowers quite late.

I was also thinking I could raise a few annual climbers: I had some Thunbergias last year, but they were store bought. I’m considering either: Thunbergia alata ‘African Sunset’ (from Plants of Distinction) or maybe Thunbergia alata ‘Blushing Susie’ or Thunbergia alata ‘Salmon Shades’  from Thompson&Morgan.  Besides Thunbergias I thought I’d get Asarina procumbens and  and Maurandya ‘Bridal Bouquet’ from Plantworld. Bridal Bouquet is a very sweet climber but for some reason rarely available.

Besides these I’m also trying out some blue poppies (Meconopsis), a few Campanulas, some additional perennials and of course a few sweet peas and Nasturtiums. More on them if they turn out well.

Yllä lista kasveista joita ajattelin kokeilla tänä vuonna ja linkkejä niihin siemenkauppoihin joissa niitä on.

Ovan några växter jag tänkte prova på i år och länkar till fröfirmor som erbjuder dem.

I'am a marketing and gardening professional and I plan to blog about garden photography (with an amateur’s perspective on it), gardens, plants, most things even vaguely garden related and garden trips around the world.

Hello Lynn, Astrantia is a Cottage Garden stallwart so I had to have it in mine. I had to look up moon fewolr and saw that it looks very similar to bindweed I hope you don’t have that! We’ve got some that’s happily climbing into the cherry tree and beginning to smother a few other shrubs. It is pretty but terribly invasive. I can’t wait to try rose cuttings but I’ll have to wait for mine to grow a bit more first before trying, otherwise I’ll end up taking them back down to bare root size!
