Villa Borghese
The Villa Borghese is not so much a villa as it is a giant and beautiful park in Rome. There is of course an actual villa, which in France would be called a chateau and in several other places a palace. Most of the showy planting is around the building in question and behind a wrought iron fence. These pictures have mostly been taken by extending my arm and camera through the bars, setting it for auto focus and hoping for the best. Considering that, I am happy with the result.. It was the perfect time (around May 1st) for seeing the massive plantings of Iris germanica (I’m guessing) in…

Villa Landriana
It so cold here that I am almost losing hope of ever seeing spring again, but until then, some browsing in my photo album might help. I went on a garden tour to Italy last spring with my local garden society. The tour was organized very well by the Swedish company Rosebud Tours. We visited quite a few nice places, but out of those Villa Landriana was a definite favorite of mine. Russel Page, the world famous garden designer has had some hand in this garden. The garden was divided into several rooms, which I don’t always like that much, but when the rooms are quite fantastic, I find myself not…

Genius Loci
This picture is for the Gardening Gone Wild Picture This Photo Contest , this is a direct link to the pic as I have right click disabled on this site. ’Genius loci’ is the theme for Gardening Gone Wild’s picture contest this month. I like the theme, it was always central to me when I had my gardening design business and did more garden designing than I do now. Ice roses – or are they called that in English? Genius loci refers to a sense of place i.e. the sprit of a certain place. In terms of garden design it could be to match the design of a house to other materials in…

Gardens Illustrated has Gone Commercial
The new cover in the middle, two old quite un-commercial favorites on each side, the one on the right is from before BBC took over. Gardens Illustrated has Gone Commercial…. But only in comparison to itself. Gardens Illustrated is another one of my absolute favorite gardening magazines besides Garden Design. Gardens Illustrated started out in gardening a little before me, my first issue seems to be the 1996/1997 December January issue, nr 23. Within a year of reading it I was a subscriber. I took a break at subscribing at some point, actually because I was annoyed at how un-commercial it was at that point. Even though I’m heavily into gardening…

The Garden’s Green Year
The title of the post is a clumsy translation of a new gardening book by two of my old classmates and good friends from gardening school. I’m very proud of them, Stina Pyrrö, the author, was a reporter even before she came to gardening school and Hanna Marttinen, the photographer, did the same thing I did, i.e. studied some more after gardening school; in her case photography. Hanna is a fantastic photographer as well as one of my best friends and I’ve worked with her both in my day job and doing freelance work. Some of the pictures in the book have been previously published, which is why I’m in…
