    Genius Loci

This picture is for the Gardening Gone Wild   Picture This Photo Contest , this is a direct link to the pic as I have right click disabled on this site. ’Genius loci’ is the theme for Gardening Gone Wild’s picture contest this month. I like the theme, it was always central to me when I had my gardening design business and did more garden designing than I do now. Ice roses – or are they called that in English? Genius loci refers to a sense of place i.e. the sprit of a certain place. In terms of garden design it could be to match the design of a house to other materials in…

    Spring is Approaching

Or to be more exact it is now possible to tell yourself that spring is approaching, since the sun can feel a bit warm when its shining and it actually shines a bit. I’ve had some heating in my greenhouse this winter. It hasn’t always kept it above freezing, but it looks like it’s been enough for my newest tree peony. It still grows in a pot and I remain hopeful that the Cordylines and at least a few of my Agapanthuses are alive. I fear my Coloacasia is a goner, but perhaps I’ll find a new bulb a the Spring Garden Fair in Helsinki in April. Kevät lähestyy – tai…

    A Berlin Break

Florals the Berlin way. Kukkais-Berliiniä. Blommigt på Berlinvis. Going to Berlin had nothing to do with gardens, and that was a good thing because it really wasn’t the most flattering time of year in terms of garden experiences. Berlin has a lot of attractive sides, very stylish buildings and pretty parks, but the more interesting parts of Berlin are the rough and very urban parts with a bit of old east-Berlin architecture thrown in.

    Hellebores

One of the first things that brighten up the new season is the Hellebores. Some years, they even brighten up the winter. A few years ago I managed to plant one in January and two years ago one actually flowered on January 25th. That’s not going to happen this year.   Before the snow came I did see that some of the Helleborus nigers had a few buds, but then the snow came in spades and now I’m just hoping that they will survive for a few months. I’ve bought most of my Hellebores as plants, but I’ve also managed to raise one plant from seed. They are a bit…

    Climate Envy

I follow a few garden firms and garden magazines on facebook. Some of them have nice updates and link to good sites, but this time of the year they can be a bit annoying. The culprit this time around was gardenersworld. They linked to “tasks of the week” and it was PLANTING bare root roses… yeah, maybe in three months time around here.
