I’m Gardening on TV
I got a call yesterday and was asked to be on the Swedish speaking morning show Min Morgon. They were interested in current gardening tasks. It’s still very much winter here so it was either repotting, growing herbs indoors or starting plants from seed. I went with the two latter. I you are in Finland or use a VPN service like the ones my expat friends like you can see the show here until the 24th of February. My Matryoshka Greenhouse
My greenhouse has transformed into a matryoshka greenhouse in the sense that there is a similar smaller greenhouse inside it right now. The smaller greenhouse is actually made from bubble wrap and inside it I have a heater. This way the heat stays inside a smaller better insulated space and I have a place for my Agapanthus, Camellia and other tender beauties. I hope they’ll survive, since the winter did eventually arrive here. Kasvihuoneestani on tullut maatuskakasvihuone. Varsinaisen kasvihuoneen sisäpuolelle on nyt kuplamuovinen kasvihuone ja sen sisällä on lämpöpuhallin. Näin olen saanut pienemmän osan paljon paremmin eristetyksi ja voin säilyttää siellä sinisarjoja, kameliaani ja muita hiukan herkkiä kasveja. Toivottavasti ne…

A Frozen New Year!
I’m wishing you a ”Happy New Year!” but frozen is what it’s turned out to be 😉 The sea was lightly frozen over today and we have a very light sprinkling of snow. I think I’d be alright with a month of mild winter now and then the snowdrops could start blooming in February, please… Toivotan kyllä teille “Onnellista Uutta Vuotta!”, mutta tämä päivä alkoi jäätyneellä kelillä. This Year Illustrates the Next
As in I made a calendar for 2012 based on pictures taken this year. I’ve made calendars before, but this year it was surprisingly easy as I’ve taken a lot of pictures for this blog. The masses of snow last winter made for some pretty pictures and then the summer was rainy enough for some good growth and nothing really got scorched. The fall was long and warm so all in all it was a pretty good year for the garden! Indoors and Ikebana
The weather outside has been atrocious so the only ”gardening” I’ve been doing was visiting an ikebana exhibition at Gallery Johan S earlier today. I can’t quite remember exactly when I took up ikebana: it must have been after I studied some flower arranging at the gardening school and before I went to Japan. I collected a lot of vases and a local institution actually offered a course in ikebana that I attended. It’s been a hobby of mine that I haven’t pursued very actively, but now and again.
